NSW Food Safety Supervisor course
On 1 April 2011, the NSW Food Authority enforced the requirement of the Food Safety Supervisor (FSS) certificate for most food service businesses.
The list includes:
- Supermarkets selling hot food
- Market stall holders selling food
It was stated that by 1 October 2011, the list of food service businesses must have at least one staff member complete the FSS course and notify their local council and the NSW Food Authority of their FSS certificate details.
We are now in 2014 and there are still hundreds of food service businesses throughout NSW who are not complying with this legislation, breaking the law and risking hefty fines in the process.
The NSW Food Authority is urging these businesses to act quickly and follow the instructions outlined in the ‘FSS training deadline alert’ available on their website.
The NSW Food Authority describes a Food Safety Supervisor as a person who:
- holds an FSS certificate that is no more than five years old
- is not an FSS for any other food premises or any other mobile catering businesses
- has the authority to supervise other people handling food and to see that the handling is done safely
The training must be completed with a Registered Training Organisation that is approved by the NSW Food Authority and appears on the list of approved training providers available on their website. Australian Training Solutions (ATS) is one of these approved training providers.
The online course is completed online, with assessment tasks completed in the participant’s workplace kitchen and witnessed by a manager in the workplace. ATS have courses available in Sydney CBD as well as ONLINE to suit the needs of all participants.
